Thickness Planer JIG – Flatten Boards

Intro:

Back in 2020, I was looking for a way to flatten pieces of hardwood I needed for projects in our new house. The ideal solution would be to buy a jointer, but I did not have the budget for a decent model.

As I already had a Makita Thickness Planer, I was thinking the reason why it would not flatten boards sufficiently. I thought if I had my boards on a long, flat surface, with the aid of shims, I could keep them completely flat as they passed through the thickness planer.

The question several people asked me was why the stopper piece was on the front instead of the back. It is because the planer drags the lumber forward, and we need the lumber to push the jig along with it.

Materials needed:

  • 2 scrap pieces of 3/4″ (18mm) melamine-coated MDF boards
  • 1 short piece of 1″ x  1/2″ (25mm x 12.5mm) lumber for the stopper
  • 20 pcs. 1 1/4″ (30 mm) #8 wood screws

I recorded the video above in February, 2022. In it, I show how I made the jig, and how I use it
